A. As a meteorologist who has done this before, I'll tell you that we don't exactly "calculate" it. It's mostly an intuition thing. A 30% chance of rain, by definition, means that the given set of weather conditions will produce rain 30 out of 100 times. So when we are forecasting, generally we put together the general pattern of what we think will happen. Then we figure if it will produce precipitation or not. If it does, we do a pattern recognition to figure out how likely it is the system will produce the precipitation. This is where the probability is born. I can tell you for a fact that we do not base it off models alone. Rather, we use the models as a guidance to help us figure out the weather pattern of the day, then go from… [cont.]
